A heterocyclic aldehyde. It is also called 2-furancarbaldehyde or α-furaldehyde. It is found in fusel oil and several other essential oils. It is produced by the dehydration of pentoses, and industrially it is obtained by distilling corn cobs and oat husks while heating them with dilute sulfuric acid. It is a colorless, oily liquid with a peculiar odor. It dissolves in water and mixes with ethanol (ethyl alcohol) and ether in any ratio. If left in the air, it oxidizes and becomes a yellowish-brown resinous substance. Industrially, it is used as a raw material for phenol-furan resins, a petrochemical solvent, a raw material for tetrahydrofuran, and as an insecticide. Symptoms of acute toxicity include drunkenness and headaches, and chronic toxicity has been reported to cause liver damage and mutagenicity.
