Pottery made in Gojo-cho, Nara City. The name Akahada ware comes from Mount Gojo's other name, Akahadayama, and is also called Gojo ware. It is one of the Seven Enshu Kilns. The Nishikyo Hills area of Nara City has been a thriving area for pottery since ancient times, producing roof tiles for Heian-kyo, red and white earthenware seat pottery and braziers for Kasuga Jinnin in the Middle Ages, and earthenware braziers (Nara braziers) since the beginning of the tea ceremony. Akahada ware first emerged in this area as a private kiln during the Tenmei era (1781-1789), and around 1796 (Kansei 8), the lord of Yamato Koriyama Domain, Yanagisawa Gyozan, summoned the potters Inosuke and Jihei from Kyoto to open a kiln at Akahadayama in Gojo Village as an official kiln, and later reverted to being a private kiln. During the Tenpo era (1830-1844), the master craftsman Okuda Mokuhaku of Koriyama adopted the Kyo-yaki style and developed it further. Akahada ware has a reddish milky white base, and there are many excellent pieces for Noh dolls and Nara-e colored pottery.
