This is an old town in Yuki County, occupying the lowlands of the Kinu River basin in the southwest of Ibaraki Prefecture. The central city, which is served by the Kanto Railway, was once a river port on the Kinu River and was known for producing Ishige Tsumugi silk, which is still shipped to Tokyo and Kansai today. The town has extensive rice paddies and produces many vegetables. Kunoshima is the birthplace of Nagatsuka Takashi. In January 2006, it merged with Mizukaido City to become Joso City. It has an area of ​​43.84 km2 and a population of 22,065 (2003).
