This is an old town in Yuki County, occupying the lowlands of the Kinu River basin in the southwest of Ibaraki Prefecture. The central city, which is served by the Kanto Railway, was once a river port on the Kinu River and was known for producing Ishige Tsumugi silk, which is still shipped to Tokyo and Kansai today. The town has extensive rice paddies and produces many vegetables. Kunoshima is the birthplace of Nagatsuka Takashi. In January 2006, it merged with Mizukaido City to become Joso City. 茨城県南西部,鬼怒(きぬ)川流域低地を占める結城(ゆうき)郡の旧町。関東鉄道が通じる中心市街はかつて鬼怒川の河港で,石下紬(つむぎ)の産で知られ,現在でも東京,関西へ出荷。水田が広く,野菜も多産。国生は長塚節(たかし)の生地。2006年1月,水海道市と合併し市制,常総市となる。43.84km2。2万2065人(2003)。
