Kaomisekyougen - Kaomisekyougen

Japanese:
Kaomisekyougen - Kaomisekyougen
In the Edo period, the Kabuki performances held in November were called Kaomise. The contract between the impresario (promoter) and the actors was for a year, and was changed in November, so this month was the most important month for the New Year. The form that started in Kamigata spread to Edo, where it was held frequently along with Kamigata in December. As a way of introducing the new members of the troupe, the plays were not complicated in content, and were often very light, with a strong celebratory mood, but there were various ritual rules. In Edo, the first (jidaimono) Kyogen performance always had "Shibaraku" as the third mitateme, and other dance dramas were also performed. Today, this custom has fallen into disuse, and the term Kaomise performance is essentially meaningless. Performances in October at Nagoya's Misonoza, November at Tokyo's Kabukiza, and December at Kyoto's Minamiza are the regular events.
