Himation - Himation (English spelling)

A drapery-style outer garment worn mainly over the chiton by men and women in ancient Greece. It was a rectangular piece of wool about 1-2 meters long and 3-5.5 meters wide, and was worn in a variety of ways, but all of them pursued elegance and grace through the beauty of the natural folds that appeared when it was draped over the body, and, together with the chiton, it had a great influence on later clothing as a typical example of the drapery style. The word also originally comes from a word meaning "to put on" or "to cover," and often refers to the fabric itself.

古代ギリシアの男女が主としてキトンの上に着用したドレーパリー形式の外衣。縦1～2メートル、横3～5.5メートルほどの長方形のウール地で、さまざまな着方があったが、いずれも、体にかけるときに出る自然のひだの美しさによって、気品や優雅さを追求したものであり、キトンとともに、ドレーパリー形式の典型として後世の衣服に与えた影響は大きい。またこの語はもともと「着せる」「かぶせる」という意味をもつ語に由来しており、布地そのものをさす場合も多い。
