In the Middle Ages, they were subordinate to Gion Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto, and engaged in miscellaneous tasks such as security police and cleaning within the shrine grounds. They lived in the Gion area near Kamo-no-kawara River. They were known as "Tsurumeso" (string servants), and made and sold bowstrings and arrows. In addition to cleaning the grounds, the shrine, and the Shinko-ji path during the Gion Festival, they also had the right to dispose of and bury corpses in times of war and famine, and made profits by taking the clothes and grave goods of the dead. In 1371, they clashed with the Kawara-mono who claimed similar rights. Furthermore, in times of trouble, they were fierce military and police forces for the Gion Shrine.
