A Buddhist scholar from the Meiji to Showa periods. Born in Miyagi Prefecture. Graduated from the Department of Philosophy, College of Letters, Tokyo Imperial University in 1898 (Meiji 31). He became a professor at the same university, and after retiring, served as a professor at Toyo University and a council member of the Tokyo Research Institute of the Institute of Oriental Culture. Between 1917 (Taisho 6) and 1929 (Showa 4), he traveled to China five times and surveyed cultural and historical sites related to the three religions of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism. He wrote 15 volumes, including "Chinese Buddhist Historical Sites," "A Survey of Chinese Buddhist Historical Sites," and "Chinese Cultural Historical Sites" (co-authored with Sekino Tadashi), making a significant contribution to the study of Chinese Buddhism. His other works include "Studies on Buddha Nature," "Studies on the Baolin Biography," "Complete List of Translations of Buddhist Scriptures from the Later Han to the Song and Qi Dynasties," one volume each of "Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism in China," and "Studies on Chinese Buddhism" in three volumes.
