…Fruits can be classified based on the shape of the pericarp as follows. First, there are two main categories: dry fruits, which have a dry pericarp, and fleshy fruits, which have a juicy pericarp. Dry fruits are further divided into dehiscent fruits, in which the pericarp splits open to expose the seeds, and indehiscent fruits, in which the pericarp does not split open. Dehiscent fruits are usually found in fruits with many seeds, and in the case of isolated pistils, dehiscent fruit dehiscent occurs along the marginal attachment of the carpel (in peonies), along the dorsal side of the carpel (in magnolias), or along both the attachment and dorsal sides (in legumes) (Figure 4). …
