A general term for parasitic crustaceans classified as Branchiura in the subclass of the class Gnathopoda. They are related to butterflies. There is one order and one family, with about 100 known species. They are generally 1-1.5cm long. Their bodies are flattened and covered with a carapace. The second maxilla is modified into a pair of large suckers, between which lies the stinger and proboscis. A few species are known to have hooks instead of suckers. Most species are found in freshwater, where they temporarily parasitize the surface of fish and suck their blood. They can cause great harm in fish farms, and this parasitism is called fish lice infestation.
