Aigo (rabbitfish)

Aigo (rabbitfish)

A marine fish belonging to the order Perciformes and family Siganidae of the class Osteichthyes. It has local names such as Ai and Ae. It is found in the shallow waters of the Central Japan, Western Pacific and Indian Oceans. Its body is long and oval, laterally compressed, with white spots scattered across a light brown background. It is easily distinguished from other species of Perciformes by a spine on each of the front and rear ends of its pelvic fins and seven spines on its anal fin. It has small, round scales, giving the impression of being scaleless. It swims in schools around rocky reefs, preferring to feed on seaweed and sometimes small animals on the bottom. It can reach a body length of 50 centimeters, making it the largest of the rabbitfish species and a target for fishing. It lays sticky eggs in the summer. There are over a dozen closely related species, including the Japanese rabbitfish, but all of these are common in shallow tropical waters. The spines on each fin are arrow-shaped, and in the recesses are numerous cells that secrete venom. If the fish is stung by these, the cells will break and the venom will be injected, causing severe pain, so care must be taken when handling the fish. The meat has a sea smell, and is not highly valued as an edible fish, but in winter the smell fades, and it is delicious when grilled with salt or stewed.
