A town in Iwase County in the southern part of the Nakadori region in south-central Fukushima Prefecture. Most of the town is a hilly plateau, sandwiched between the Abukuma River in the east and the Shakadō River in the west, with rice fields. The town's center is Kasaishi along the Tohoku Main Line, and it developed as a post station on the Oshu Kaido road. It produces mainly rice, but also cucumbers, tomatoes, apples, and strawberries, and also raises livestock. 福島県中南部,中通り地方南部の岩瀬郡の町。大部分は丘陵性台地で,東部の阿武隈(あぶくま)川と西部の釈迦堂川に挟まれ,水田が開ける。中心は東北本線に沿う笠石で奥州街道の宿駅として発達,水稲を中心に,キュウリ,トマト,リンゴ,イチゴを産し,畜産も行う。東日本大震災で,町内において被害が発生。31.30km2。1万2815人(2010)。
