Protopterus - Protopterus

A general term for the genus Protopterus of the family Protopteridae of the order Pulmonatii of the class Osteichthyes. African lungfish. There are six species in three families and three genera of extant lungfish, of which four species belong to the African genus Protopterus, and these one genus and four species make up the family Protopteridae. They have adapted to dry climates, digging holes in the mud and hibernating there during dry periods.

硬骨魚綱肺魚目プロトプテルス科のプロトプテルス属Protopterusの総称。アフリカ産肺魚類。現生の肺魚類には3科3属6種があるが、そのうち4種までがアフリカ産のプロトプテルス属に入り、この1属4種でプロトプテルス科を構成する。乾燥気候への適応を示し、渇水期には泥中に穴を掘ってその中で休眠する。
