Sekikawa [Village] - Sekikawa

Japanese: 関川[村] - せきかわ

A village in Iwafune County, northeastern Niigata Prefecture. Population 7,781 (1995). It consists of a basin formed by the Arakawa River, which flows west through the center, and surrounding mountainous areas. Settlements are distributed along the main tributary of the Arakawa River, with Shimonoseki at the center of the basin. The main industry is agriculture, but the upper reaches of the Arakawa River in the east form part of Bandai-Asahi National Park, and tourism development is underway, including ski resorts, centered on the Arakawa Onsen area (Takanosu, Takase, Kira, and Yuzawa hot springs), which has abundant hot water. The entire village was devastated by the Uetsu flood in 1967, but the Arakawa River was renovated and the village has since been restored.

新潟県北東部，岩船郡の村。人口7781(1995)。中央を西流する荒川によって形成された盆地と周辺山地からなり，盆地中央の下関を中心に荒川本支流に沿って集落が分布する。基幹産業は農業であるが，東部の荒川上流は磐梯朝日国立公園の一部をなし，湯量の豊富な荒川温泉郷(鷹ノ巣，高瀬，雲母（きら），湯沢の各温泉)を中心にスキー場などの観光開発が進められている。1967年の羽越水害では全村が壊滅的被害を受けたが，荒川の河川改修などが行われ，現在は復興している。
