Japanese: 里[村] - さと
Village - Sato
A village in Satsuma County, Kagoshima Prefecture, occupying the eastern part of Kami-Koshikijima Island at the northern end of the Koshikijima Islands. Population 1,676 (1995). The central settlement has developed on a sandbar connected to the mainland called a tombolo. It is the northern gateway to the Koshikijima Islands, and there is a regular ferry service between the port and Kushikino Port. In addition to cultivating rice, sweet potatoes, and the local specialty, the kanoko lily, the village is also active in raising beef cattle and pigs communally. The village is also blessed with good fishing grounds, and the development of the fishing port has led to an increase in the amount of fish caught. Historic sites include the remains of Kamezuru Castle, which was the residence of the Ogawa clan, who were the lords of Koshikijima in the Middle Ages, as well as the remains of the Tsuguchi Guardhouse and the Tomimi Guardhouse.
