Noh actor. Shite actor of the Hosho school. Real name Masakichi. Born in Nagoya. He studied under his grandfather Noguchi Shobei and the 16th Hosho Kuro, one of the three great masters of the Meiji period, and was praised as a peer of Matsumoto Nagashi. He was also known as the spirited Kita Roppeita and the rank Noguchi Kanesuke, and although he had a difficult voice, his wonderful sense of rhythm and outstanding presence in Noh greatly influenced many successors, including Kanze Hisao of another school. He was a supreme master who mastered the mysterious art of Zeami. He became a member of the Japan Art Academy in 1950. He suddenly passed away on stage in Fukuoka during a performance of "Sumida-gawa". His books include "Kuromon-cho Gei-wa" (1943) and "Kanesuke Gei-wa" (1953).
