…Died in Paris. Following his first film, The Murderer Lives at No. 21 (1942) and his second, The Reporter (1943), both shot under the Nazi occupation, and his third, Quai des Crimes (1947), he quickly became a leading director of crime thrillers. He went on to make suspense films permeated with dark pessimism, such as The Wages of Fear (1952), which won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, L'amour le diabolique (1954), which was awarded the Louis-Delluc Prize, and The Spy (1957). On the other hand, he pursued strong erotic expression in Manon (1948), starring the "16-year-old villain" Cécile Aubry, and The Truth (1960), starring Brigitte Bardot. He also pioneered a new field in art films by using the groundbreaking technique of filming the painting being done on a canvas from the back, and in his documentary Picasso: The Secret of Genius (1955), which was awarded the Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, he fully demonstrated his "sensibility for form."

As an actor, he achieved success in 1952 with The Wages of Fear (directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot), and thereafter appeared in such controversial films as Jules Dassin's The Rules (1958), Alain Resnais' War Is Over (1965), and Costa-Gavras' trilogy (Z, Confessions, Martial Law, 1968-72).
