〘 noun 〙 (meaning a place where books are collected and studied) ① In China, during the Tang dynasty, a place where books were compiled and collected by the imperial court. ② A private school that developed after the Song dynasty. Some were government-run in the Yuan dynasty, but many were independent scholars, such as Zhu Xi, who restored the Hakuro-do Shoin in the early Song dynasty, and the Yangming school in the Ming dynasty. ③ In Japan, a living room and study in a temple or samurai's residence. A study hall. A library. A place of learning. ※Montoku Jitsuroku - Jinshu 2nd year (852), February Otsushi, " Dying in the Western Shoin of Jion Temple " ※Essays, Teijo Miscellany (around 1784), 14 "Zen had been popular since the Kamakura period, and the samurai enjoyed Zen, and would often practice zazen, so a study was built for them like those in a temple." ④ A building that juts out over the veranda, with a light-colored paper screen set up in front and a writing desk built into the deck. It was always set up between the shoin rooms, and so it is thought to have been given this name. It is used to store books, inkstones, etc. Shoin shelves. Shoin floor. Shoin front. Attached shoin. *Okazakiki (1523) "Next is the sitting room. There is a floor facing the west. Above the floor is a shoin." *Ukiyo-zoshi, Koshoku Mankintan (1694), Vol. 5 "Above the shoin (shoin) there is a plaque with five characters written in a woman's calligraphy, 'Inishibe wa'." ⑤ A room built in the shoin style. Many were used by samurai for ceremonies and to receive guests. Depending on its location, it is called the front shoin or inner shoin, and depending on its structure, it is called the black shoin or white shoin. Front sitting room. Guest hall.
