Japanese: 死蠟 - しろう（英語表記）adipocere

An abnormal phenomenon that occurs when a corpse is placed in water or damp soil and the air is cut off. The soft form of necrotic wax resembles rotten cheese, while the hard form resembles brittle gypsum, and both have a moldy smell. The completed necrotic wax floats on water, is insoluble in water, and most of it dissolves in ether or alcohol. When heated, it dissolves and takes on a wax-like appearance, hence the name. Usually, subcutaneous fat becomes necrotic in 2 to 3 months, deeper tissues in 4 to 5 months, and it takes 2 to 3 years for the entire body to become necrotic.

死体が水中や湿潤な土中に置かれ，空気が遮断された状態において生じる異常死体現象。死蠟のうち軟らかいものは腐ったチーズ様であり，硬いものはもろいセッコウ(石膏)様で，いずれもかび臭い。完成された死蠟は水に浮き，水に不溶で，大部分はエーテルやアルコールに溶け，加熱すると溶解して蠟のような性状をとるため，この名称が付けられている。通常，皮下脂肪は2～3ヵ月で死蠟化し，深部組織は4～5ヵ月，全身が死蠟化するには2～3年を要する。
