Chemical plating - Kagaku plating

In contrast to electroplating, which is the mainstream method of plating, which uses electrolysis, chemical plating, or electroless plating, is a plating method that does not rely on electrolysis. The material to be plated is immersed in a bath consisting of a metal salt solution and a reducing agent, and the metal is reduced and precipitated on the surface. Nickel, cobalt, copper, silver, and other metals are plated using this method. One distinctive feature is that the material to be plated is not limited to metals. The silver mirror reaction, in which glass is silver-plated to produce mirrors, is an example of a chemical plating technique that has been used since the early 19th century.

めっきの主流である電気分解を利用した電気めっきに対して，電気分解によらないめっき加工法を化学めっき，または無電解めっきelectroless platingと呼ぶ。金属塩溶液と還元剤からなる浴に被処理材を浸し，この表面に金属を還元析出させるもので，ニッケル，コバルト，銅，銀などのめっきが行われている。被処理材は金属に限らない点が特色の一つである。ガラスに銀めっきを行って鏡を製造する銀鏡反応は，19世紀初頭から行われてきた化学めっき技術の実例である。
