…Italian architect. He led the Roman Baroque after Bernini, Borromini, and Pietro da Cortona. He developed the basic Baroque architectural techniques, such as free-standing columns that stood apart from the walls and bright lighting from domes. On the other hand, under the influence of his father, Girolamo R. (1570-1665), an architect who had lived in northern Italy, he adopted a northern-style plan format for the Church of Santa Maria in Campitelli, giving a new impetus to the Roman architectural world. …
