A general term for crustaceans in the suborder Caprellidea, often referring to those in the family Caprellidae. They have small, slender bodies and are commonly found among seaweed and bryozoans. They move and walk in a manner similar to that of an inchworm. When they swim, they shake their bodies like moss larvae. The name is said to come from the fact that their shells crack when they dry out. An old poem from the Kokinshu reads, "Amanokarumo ni su mu mushi no wa kara to ne wo koso nakame yo wo bauramiji" (Amanokarumo ni su mu mushi no wa kara to ne wo koso nakame yo wo bauramiji).
