It is a standard for creating web pages. It is also the name of the file format for web pages, and the extension is either "html" or "htm", with the former being the standard.
An HTML file is actually a text file. How the layout should be done, which parts should be treated as link information to other pages, and other information are written in text along with the main text. Also, images on the page exist separately as independent image files, and the HTML file only contains information about which images to place where. Creating a web page is nothing more than creating this HTML file. It may seem difficult, but if you use commercially available homepage creation software, you can design a web page just like using a word processor, and the software will automatically create the file itself. HTML is an abbreviation for "Hyper Text Markup Language."

ウェブページを作るための規格です。ウェブページのファイル形式の名前でもあり、拡張子は「html」もしくは「htm」で、標準は前者です。
HTMLファイルの実体はテキストファイルです。どのようにレイアウトをするか、どの部分を他のページへのリンク情報として扱うかなどが、本文と一緒に文字で記述されています。また、ページ上の画像は独立した画像ファイルとして別に存在しており、HTMLファイルには、どの画像をどこに配置するかといった情報のみが書かれています。ウェブページ作りは、このHTMLファイルを作ることにほかなりません。難しそうですが、市販のホームページ作成ソフトを使えば、ワープロを使うような感覚でウェブページをデザインでき、ファイル自体はソフトが自動的に作ってくれます。なお、HTMLは、「Hyper Text Markup Language」の略称です。
