…The Australian representatives of the counterculture that flourished worldwide in the 1960s and 1970s were Frank Moorhouse (1938-), Michael Wilding (1942-), and Murray Bail (1941-), who were a small-scale sublimation of the two major lineages mentioned above. On the other hand, writers who were not related to the counterculture but were precursors to Moorhouse and others were Hal Porter (1911-84), a short story writer who created a collage of intense parodic language, and David Ireland (1927-), who wrote surrealist works.
