A Sunni Islamic state established by the Uzbeks in Central Asia. The Shaybanid dynasty (1500-99), the Jan dynasty (also called the Astrakhan dynasty, 1599-1785), and the Mangit dynasty (1753-1920, which seized power from the Astrakhan dynasty in 1740) all had their capital in Bukhara, and are collectively called the Bukhara Khanate. There were periods of national power and industrial prosperity, such as in the late 16th century, but the state was cut off from the Islamic heartland of Western Asia by the Shiite Safavid dynasty established in Iran, and the state's strength was generally poor due to conflicts with neighboring Kazakhs, Khiba Khanate, Khokand Khanate, and other groups, as well as feudal fragmentation within the country.
