A representative poet of medieval German literature from Strasbourg (now Strasbourg). His birth and death years are unknown. It seems certain that he was not a knight, but there are various speculations about his social status, including that he was a Strasbourg government official, a school teacher, a scholar, or a clergyman. Although there are lyric poems attributed to him, his forte was epic poetry, and his unfinished Tristan und Isolde (c. 1210) is a masterpiece of medieval German literature. The reason it was left unfinished is said to be his death or a stalemate in his poetry. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
