Takesai - Chikusai

Japanese:
Takesai - Chikusai

A kana zoshi from the early Edo period. Written by Tomiyama Doya. Two volumes. Completed and published between 1621 (Genwa 7) and 1623. Tomiyama Doya (1584-1634) was a doctor under Manase Gensaku. The story is about Takesai, a quack doctor living in Kyoto, who gives up on his life with no patients and decides to go on a pilgrimage around the country with his servant Niminosuke. First, he visits the famous historical sites of Kyoto to see them one last time, then travels down the Tokaido and lives in Nagoya for three years, where he tries a strange cure but fails. He then sets off again and arrives in Edo, where he tours the city and then wishes to settle down. It is a parody based on kyoka-like ideas in terms of character setting, development, and rhetoric, and was widely read at the time, leading to many imitations being published. It also became the prototype for famous place records such as "Tōkaidō Meisho-ki."
