Thamin deer

Japanese: ターミンジカ（英語表記）thamin deer

A mammal of the Cervidae family in the order Artiodactyla. An Asian deer with a unique first branch of antlers that extends forward. Also called the Eld's deer. Its body color is dark brown with a few spots, and males have a mane on their neck. Its body length is 180 cm, shoulder height is 107-115 cm, and tail length is about 20 cm. It is found in Assam, Indochina, Myanmar, Thailand, Hainan Island, etc., and large herds of more than 50 individuals were once common, but due to hunting, it has become extinct in many areas. It usually lives in forests, and comes out to the forest edges and grasslands in the morning and evening to feed, avoiding the hot midday hours.

偶蹄目シカ科の哺乳類。前方に向かってのびる特異な第1枝の角をもつアジア産のシカ。エルドジカともいう。体色は暗褐色の地にわずかに斑点が認められ，雄のくびにはたてがみがある。体長180cm，肩高107～115cm，尾長20cm前後。アッサム，インドシナ，ミャンマー，タイ，海南（ハイナン）島などに分布し，かつては50頭を超える大きな群れがふつうに見られたが，狩猟のため，多くの地方で絶滅した。ふつう森林にすみ，昼の暑い時間を避けて，朝夕林縁部や草原に出て採食する。
