...A perennial plant of the Rosaceae family (illustration) commonly found in fields and mountains. It has an underground rhizome, and the stem grows to a height of about 1m, with small branches. Both the basal leaves and the leaves on the stem are pinnately compound. The leaflets of the basal leaves are usually in 5 pairs, oblong, elliptical or oval, and 3-5cm long. The spikes are erect, 1-2cm in size, and produce dense dark red flowers from summer to autumn. The flowers have no petals, and the calyx is divided into four parts to form a petal shape. There are four stamens, and the fruit is small and square. The Japanese name for Waremoko is written as 吾木香, 我毛香, 吾又紅, etc., but the origin of the word is not entirely clear, and it does not seem to be related to the red color of the flowers. ...
