Moray (English spelling)

Japanese: マリー(英語表記)Moray
Moray (English spelling)
A unitary authority (councillor area) in the northeast of Scotland, United Kingdom. Formerly called Elginshire. The seat of its administrative office is Elgin. It extends inland from the south shore of Murray Bay. It comprises most of the former districts of Murray and Banffshire. In 1975 it became part of the Grampian district in a municipal reorganization, and in 1996 it became a unitary authority. The rivers Spey and Findhorn rise in the hills and peat bogs in the south, cross the fertile coastal plains, and empty into Murray Bay. At the southern end stands the great massif of the Cairngorms, which rises to an elevation of nearly 1,220m. In ancient times it was inhabited by the Picts, but in the 9th century Kenneth McAlpin united it with the Scots and it came to be called Murray. Murray was once much larger than the former districts, and was one of the seven traditional regions of Scotland. It was hardly affected by the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century, but tourism and fishing developed with the opening of the railway. The main agricultural products are cereals, potatoes, and pasture for hay. Beef cattle are raised on the plains, and sheep are grazed on the hills. Manufacturing industries are mainly food processing, shipbuilding, and equipment for the North Sea oil industry, and whiskey production is also carried out. Tourism is also an important pillar of the local economy, thanks to salmon fishing on the River Spey, seaside resorts, and beautiful rural scenery. The largest city, Elgin, is also the commercial center. Area: 2,238 km2 . Population: 89,030 (2006 estimate).

The area is located in northwest Victoria, Australia, between the Wimmera and Murray rivers. The unique eucalyptus vegetation, known as the Murray, was once cleared for wheat cultivation, causing problems with soil erosion. Today, as part of the Wimmera-Murray Water District, water is supplied to an area of approximately 25,000 km2, and agricultural development is underway with a combination of irrigated pastures, fodder crops and cereal crops.
