A city facing the Pacific Ocean in southern Hokkaido. Established as a city in 1970. The central city area is the Horobetsu and Washibetsu districts, where the Muroran Main Line passes. Chemical and concrete industries are carried out, and it is also a residential area for commuters from neighboring Muroran City to the southwest. The Do-o Expressway passes through the city. Noboribetsu Onsen (sulfur springs, acidic alum and green alum springs, etc., 45°C), which belongs to Shikotsu-Toya National Park, is located in a valley in the northern part of the city. It is known as a representative hot spring in Hokkaido, and a bustling hot spring town has developed. It is home to Jigokudani, Oyunuma, Noboribetsu Primeval Forest (a natural monument), and is also close to Karurusu Onsen. 212.21 km2 . Population: 51,526 (2010).

北海道南部,太平洋に面する市。1970年市制。中心市街地は室蘭本線が通じる幌別,鷲別(わしべつ)地区で,化学・コンクリート工業が行われ,南西隣の室蘭市通勤者の住宅地でもある。道央自動車道が通じる。支笏洞爺国立公園に属する登別温泉(硫黄泉,酸性ミョウバン・緑バン泉等,45℃)は市域北部の谷間にあり,北海道の代表的な温泉として知られ,繁華な温泉街が発達。地獄谷,大湯沼,登別原始林(天然記念物)があり,カルルス温泉にも近い。212.21km2。5万1526人(2010)。
