Abbreviation: UNFPA. A subsidiary body of the General Assembly that deals with population issues, established in 1967 based on a UN General Assembly resolution. Initially, the United Nations Trust Fund for Population Activities, established under the Secretary-General of the UN, was restructured and developed in 1969 to become the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA). It was later renamed to its current name in 1987, but the abbreviation remained. In addition, the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) was designated as the organization that manages it. The main objectives of UNFPA's activities are to promote research and studies on population and family planning, and to promote international cooperation in the formulation, implementation and adjustment of policies. In particular, it provides funds and technology for population-related projects in developing countries. Specifically, in response to requests from developing countries, UNFPA provides assistance either directly or through UN-related agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) such as the World Health Organization (WHO), UNDP, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The IMF has played a central role in international conferences on population issues, such as the World Population Conference held in Bucharest in 1974, the International Conference on Population held in Mexico City in 1984, and the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) held in Cairo in 1994. It also publishes the annual "State of World Population ." Its secretariat is in New York, and as of 2014 it had approximately 2,500 staff members. Most of its operating expenses are covered by voluntary contributions from member countries. Japan provided approximately 5% of the general contribution of approximately $523 million in 2014. The State of World Populationを発行している。
