...The Camden Town Group was dissolved in 1913 and became the London Group, but it played a unique role in the development of 20th century British painting, focusing on exhibitions without advocating any particular doctrine. In 1933, Unit One was formed under the auspices of critic H. Reid, and was not a group that adhered to any particular school of painting, but rather encouraged free creativity and provided a forum for the presentation of works (some of its members were sculptors), and generally had strong constructivist or surrealist tendencies, reflecting the situation on the continent at the time. …In 1912, he joined the New British Art Club, and was appointed war artist during World War I, where he drew attention for his abstract depictions of destroyed nature. In 1933, he formed Unit One, a group of avant-garde artists and architects, and exhibited at the International Surrealist Exhibition in 1936, but his true essence lies in fantastical symbolism, which is also linked to Celtic art. During World War II, he again served as a war artist for the Air Force, and painted things such as wreckage of a shot-down plane floating in the North Sea under the moonlight. …
