A Greek term for mixed-race children born to local women by Franks (medieval Western Europeans) who came to Greece. Also called Basmulos. In terms of etymology, there is a theory that it originated from Turks in Central Asia, as well as a compound word that combines the French word gar (meaning "young person" or bât (meaning "fool")) with the medieval Morean word moulos (meaning "bastard"). It appears in the writings of Byzantine historians from the 13th century onwards and in the Annals of the Morea. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
