Originally a word used to describe objects or matters that are visible to the naked eye. Also called macro or macroscopic. Macroscopic is usually used to describe the properties and phenomena of objects made up of many molecules and atoms without going into the behavior of the individual components. The microscopic method is the use of statistical mechanics to derive the macroscopic properties of an object from the properties and behavior of its components. In a more expanded sense, the term macroscopic is also used when the emphasis is on the overall properties and behavior of a system made up of many elements. It is the opposite of microscopic.
