Born: May 16, 1827, Roermond
Died March 3, 1921. Roermond. Dutch architect. He was active in the mid-19th century and after, when the Gothic Revival was fashionable in Dutch architecture, and he restored many cathedrals, as well as building many new ones in the Gothic style. He was influenced by Pugin and J. Ruskin in terms of his ideas, and he liked British Victorian Gothic, and imported its colorful brick walling techniques to the Netherlands. His representative works include the Rijksmuseum and Amsterdam Central Station (1885-89). Amsterdam Central Station in particular is said to have been the model for Tatsuno Kingo's Tokyo Station.

オランダの建築家。 19世紀中葉以後のオランダ建築におけるゴシック・リバイバルの流行を一身に受けて活躍し，数多くの聖堂の修復を手がけるとともに，新しいゴシック様式の聖堂も多く建築した。理念的にはピュージンや J.ラスキンの影響も受け，イギリスのビクトリア朝ゴシックを好み，その彩り豊かな煉瓦壁の技法をオランダに輸入した。アムステルダム国立美術館や中央駅 (1885～89) が代表作。特にアムステルダム中央駅は，辰野金吾の東京駅のモデルになったといわれている。
