Born: May 16, 1827, Roermond Died March 3, 1921. Roermond. Dutch architect. He was active in the mid-19th century and after, when the Gothic Revival was fashionable in Dutch architecture, and he restored many cathedrals, as well as building many new ones in the Gothic style. He was influenced by Pugin and J. Ruskin in terms of his ideas, and he liked British Victorian Gothic, and imported its colorful brick walling techniques to the Netherlands. His representative works include the Rijksmuseum and Amsterdam Central Station (1885-89). Amsterdam Central Station in particular is said to have been the model for Tatsuno Kingo's Tokyo Station.
