A bulbous plant of the lily family (APG classification: Asparagaceae) planted in autumn. It sprouts around March and produces 4-5 fleshy, narrow basal leaves. In April and May, a flower stalk 10-20 cm tall emerges from the center of the leaf, producing a raceme. Native to the Mediterranean coast and Western Asia. A plant similar to hyacinth, it is highly cold-resistant and suitable for flower beds and potted plants. For flower beds, planting at least 50 bulbs in a cluster will enhance the beauty of the plant. M. armeniacum Leichtl. ex Bak. is the most commonly cultivated species, producing densely packed, dark blue flowers. M. botryoides Mill. is known as grape muscari and produces purple flowers. A variety called Alba has white flowers. Comosum plumosum Mill. var. plumosum hort., also known as plumosum, produces feathery purple-pink inflorescences.

Propagation is by bulb division. Plant in a sunny location with good drainage in October. When planting in a pot or planter, use soil with good drainage. After flowering, remove the flower petals early. When the leaves start to turn yellow in June, dig up the bulbs and dry and store them in a cool, shady place.

ユリ科（APG分類：キジカクシ科）の秋植え球根草。3月ころ芽を出し、肉質で幅の狭い根出葉を4、5枚つける。4～5月、葉の中心から高さ10～20センチメートルの花茎を出し、総状花序をつける。地中海沿岸、西アジア原産。ヒヤシンスに近い植物で、耐寒性は強く、花壇、鉢植えに向く。花壇植えの場合、少なくとも50球以上を群落的に植えると、美しさが引き立つ。アルメニアカムM. armeniacum Leichtl. ex Bak.はもっとも一般的に栽培される種で、濃青色の小花を密生する。ボトリオイデスM. botryoides Mill.はブドウムスカリとして知られ、紫色花を開く。変種に白色花のアルバがある。コモーサム・プルモーサムM. comosum Mill. var. plumosum hort.はハネムスカリともいい、紫桃色で羽毛状の花穂をつける。

　繁殖は分球により、10月ころ、日当り、排水のよい場所に植え付ける。鉢植えやプランター植えの場合、水はけのよい用土を用いる。花期後、早めに花殻を摘み取る。6月ころ、葉が黄色くなり始めたら掘り上げ、日陰の涼しい場所で乾燥して貯蔵する。
