King of Poland. Reigned 1674-96. Also known as Jan Sobieski, he is famous for being the victor in the 1683 battle against the Turks outside Vienna. As a young man, he studied in France, Germany, England, and the Netherlands. He was chosen as king after distinguishing himself in battles against the Swedes, Cossacks, rebel nobles, and Ottoman Turks. With the mediation of France, he made peace with Turkey, and attempted to carry out domestic reforms while opposing Prussia and the Habsburgs, but failed and was instead given overall command of the Western European coalition forces against Turkey.

ポーランド王。在位1674‐96年。ヤン･ソビエスキとも呼ばれ，1683年のウィーン郊外での対トルコ戦の勝者として有名。青年期にフランス，ドイツ，イギリス，オランダに遊学。スウェーデン，コサック，反乱貴族，オスマン･トルコなどとの戦いで軍功を挙げ，国王に選ばれる。フランスの仲介でトルコと和し，プロイセン，ハプスブルク家に対抗するとともに国内改革を断行しようとしたが果たさず，逆に対トルコ西欧連合軍の総指揮をとらされる。
