Record of the Lighting of the Lanterns (English: Chuán dēng lù)

Japanese: 伝灯録 - でんとうろく（英語表記）Chuán dēng lù

A history of the Chinese Zen sect. 30 volumes. Written by Dogen of Chengtian Temple in Suzhou. It was presented to the Shin sect in the first year of the Jingde era (1004) during the Northern Song dynasty and was kept in the archives by imperial sanction, so it is also called the Jingde Chuandeng Lu. There is a preface by Yang Oki, the prime minister at the time. It lists the names of 1,701 masters and the details of the transmission of the lantern, starting with the seven Buddhas of the past, through 28 generations in India and six generations in China, and ending at the beginning of the Northern Song dynasty. As Zen flourished during the Northern Song dynasty, it became one of the educational books for the scholar-officials and an authority on Zen books, and the name of the Buddha's Questions and Answers on Opportunities, which is called the 1,700 koans, comes from the number of Buddhas and Patriarchs included in this book.

中国の禅宗史書の一つ。30巻。蘇州承天寺の道原の作。北宋の景徳1年(1004)に真宗に上進し，勅許によって入蔵されたことから，《景徳伝灯録》とも呼ばれる。時の宰相，楊億の序がある。過去七仏にはじまって，インドの28代，中国の6代を経て北宋初期に至る，1701人の祖師の名と，伝灯相承（そうじよう）の次第を述べたもの。北宋時代における禅の盛大化とともに，士大夫の教養書の一つとなり，禅の本の権威となって，仏祖の機縁問答を一千七百則の公案と呼ぶのは，本書に収める仏祖の数字に基づく。
