Located in central Kochi Prefecture, this city occupies the right bank of the downstream Niyodo River. It was incorporated as a city in 1959. Takaoka, the city center, developed as a market town and a producer of washi paper. Rice farming and greenhouse horticulture are thriving in the surrounding areas. Mandarin oranges and other citrus fruits are grown in the hills. Usa, at the mouth of Uranouchi Bay, is the center of bonito flakes production. There is a bus service from Kochi City. 91.49 km2 . 高知県中部,仁淀川下流右岸を占める市。1959年市制。中心市街の高岡は和紙の産地,市場町として発達。周辺では米作,ハウス園芸栽培が盛ん。丘陵地ではミカンなど柑橘類を栽培。浦ノ内湾口の宇佐はかつお節製造の中心地。高知市からバスが通じる。91.49km2。2万8686人(2010)。
