Located in central Kochi Prefecture, this city occupies the right bank of the downstream Niyodo River. It was incorporated as a city in 1959. Takaoka, the city center, developed as a market town and a producer of washi paper. Rice farming and greenhouse horticulture are thriving in the surrounding areas. Mandarin oranges and other citrus fruits are grown in the hills. Usa, at the mouth of Uranouchi Bay, is the center of bonito flakes production. There is a bus service from Kochi City. 91.49 km2 .
