Generally, scorpions are feared by humans as being extremely poisonous, and there are expressions such as "hate them like snakes and scorpions (pronounced dakatsu, but daketsu is correct)," but there are only a few species of scorpions in the world whose venom is strong enough to be fatal. The most venomous is found in Buthus ustralis , which lives in the deserts of Africa, and the venom of Centruroides exilicauda in Mexico and B. occitanus in southern Europe and northwestern Africa can also be fatal. Scorpions often invade human homes, often hiding in gaps in cupboards, kitchens, and toilets, as well as in shoes, clothes, and bags, so caution is required in areas where highly poisonous scorpions live.

　一般に猛毒の動物として人からおそれられ，〈蛇蠍(ダカツと読まれるが，ダケツが正しい)のごとく嫌う〉などの表現があるが，刺されて命を落とすような毒の強いサソリは世界に数種しかいない。最強の毒をもつのはアフリカの砂漠にすむButhus ustralisで，メキシコのCentruroides exilicaudaや南ヨーロッパ，北西アフリカのB.occitanusの毒も致命的になることがある。サソリはよく人家に侵入し，戸棚，台所，便所の隙間，靴，衣類，かばんの中に潜り込むことも多いので，猛毒サソリの生息地では注意が必要である。…
