Al-Suhrawardī, Shihāb al-dīn Yaḥyā

Born: 1155. Sufrawald
[Died] 1191. A mystical philosopher from Aleppo-Persia. Although he was within Islam, he considered existence to be light, and tried to justify it using the doctrines of ancient Persian Zoroastrianism and Platonic theory of ideas. He placed the world of imagination between the world of wisdom and the world of the senses, and believed that this could explain mystical experiences. Because of his heretical ideas, he was not accepted by the orthodox Islamic ulama of the time, and was killed by Salah ad-Din. His influence remained in Eastern Islam, and later became mainstream in the Isfahan School, and was also incorporated into Shiite doctrine, combining with Avicennaism.

ペルシアの神秘主義哲学者。イスラム内部にありながら，存在を光とみなし，それを古代ペルシアのゾロアスター教の教義とプラトン的イデア論によって弁証しようとした。英知界と感覚世界の中間に想像界をおき，これにより神秘的経験が説明されると考えた。異端的思想のゆえに当時のイスラムの正統派ウラマーに受入れられず，サラーフ・ウッディーンに殺された。その影響は東方イスラムに残り，のちにイスファハン学派では主流を占め，またアビセンナ主義と結びついて，シーア派の教義にも取入れられた。
