This riverbank stretched out where the Shinomiya River, which flows south through Yamashina-go, Uji-gun, Yamashiro Province (present-day Yamashina-ku, Kyoto City), intersected with the Tokaido road, which runs east to west. It was a key transportation point, and a market was established there in the late Heian period, where a Jizo statue was enshrined (Uji Shui Monogatari). It was also a strategic military location, and is mentioned in the Tale of the Heike and the Taiheiki. According to these accounts, the success or failure of entering or leaving the capital depended on whether or not the riverbank could be safely crossed. In the Middle Ages, it was the name of a region that, together with Anshoji and Ueno, made up one of the seven Yamashina districts, and a checkpoint was established there. In the Edo period, the riverbank disappeared, and the area was called Shinomiya Village. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
