With the support of conservative politicians who aimed to restore the monarchy, General Pavia (1827-95) rose up in Madrid on January 2, 1874, and in December of the same year General Arsenio Martínez Campos (1831-1900) staged a coup in Sagunto, immediately overthrowing the First Republic. As a result, Alfonso XII (reigned 1874-85) became the new king and the monarchy was restored. The steering of the restoration period from 1874 onwards was then in the hands of the conservative leader Canovas del Castillo.
