It refers to the process and form of change when a social structure changes into something else, or when a simpler structure changes into a more complex one. Commentators differ on whether this change is gradual and quantitative or revolutionary and qualitative, whether the change is toward a desirable state, and whether the cause of the change is internal or external to society.
