Emanuel Geibel

German poet and critic. Born in Lübeck in northern Germany as the son of a pastor. He studied in Bonn and Berlin, became acquainted with Romantic poets, and began writing poetry in a classical style. In 1852 he was appointed professor of aesthetics at the University of Munich, where he was favored at the court of Maximilian II and became the leader of a circle of poets. In 1868 he returned to his hometown, where he died. His apolitical works "Poems" (1840) and "New Poems" (1856) were highly praised, but his strongly conservative political commentary was forgotten with the times. He was also famous as a translator.

ドイツの詩人、評論家。牧師の子として北ドイツのリューベックに生まれる。ボンとベルリンに学びロマン派詩人と交際、古典主義的手法で詩作を始める。1852年美学教授としてミュンヘン大学に赴任、マクシミリアン2世宮廷で寵遇(ちょうぐう)され、詩人サークルの指導者となる。68年故郷に帰り、同地で没。政治色のない『詩集』（1840）、『新詩集』（1856）は高く評価されるが、保守色の濃い政治評論は時代とともに忘れられた。翻訳者としても著名。
