In India, because many people suffer from snake venom, the peacock, the snake's natural enemy, is considered sacred and deified in Hinduism as a female god, Mahāmayūrī. This was adopted into Buddhism and became the Peacock Myoo, who was believed to not only ward off snake venom but also to ward off all kinds of diseases and natural disasters, and rituals were performed with the peacock as the principal deity.
