〘 noun 〙 (also "sendo") 1. To be solely responsible for something. To be in charge of a particular task. Also, the position or person. *Shosoin documents - February 25, 760, Tenpyo Hoji 4th year, Todaiji Temple Construction Office Notice: "Previously, the Buddha and Bodhisattva statues were constructed by two chief clerks, Shifu no Murajimaro, Junior Sixth Rank Lower, and chief clerk of temple construction Ando no Sukune Otaru, Senior Eighth Rank Upper, who were the sole _{responsible for the construction} ." 2. One of the positions at temples and shrines. A monk or priest who handles low-ranking chores. *Konjaku (around 1120) 17: "The temple has a sole responsible priest." 3. Since the Heian period, one of the manor officials. A shouji who is in charge of the practical aspects of the manor. *Sandai Kaku - March 13, 19th year, Engi 2nd year (902), "The title was _two envoys, a manor school, and _one sole responsible administrator."
