Hamada Kosaku

He was an archaeologist from Osaka Prefecture and the president of Kyoto Imperial University. His pen name was Seiryo. He studied Western history and art history at Tokyo Imperial University, and in 1916 (Taisho 5), he became a professor at Kyoto Imperial University, the first university in Japan to establish an archaeology course. Building on the results of his studies in the three years prior to this, especially from Flinders Petrie and Archibald H. Sayce of England, he set an excellent example in research methods, excavation surveys, publishing reports, creating compilations of remains and artifacts, making models, displaying materials, and explaining things in an easy-to-understand way, and rose to a leading position in the academic world. Although he was strict, he was also open-minded, skilled in both academic and social exchanges, stylish, skilled in painting, and talented in essays and travel writing. There are still no introductory books that surpass his "Museum" (1929, retitled "Introduction to Archaeology") and "General Theory of Archaeology" (1922).

大阪府出身の考古学研究者、京都帝国大学総長。青陵(せいりょう)と号する。東京帝国大学で西洋史学・美術史を学び、1916年（大正5）京都帝国大学にわが国最初の考古学講座が創設されて教授となる。それに先だつ3年間、とくにイギリスのフリンダース・ペトリーおよびアーチバルド・H・セイスから学んだ成果を踏まえ、研究法、発掘調査、報告書出版、遺構・遺物の集成図作成、模型製作、資料の展示、わかりやすい解説などに優れた模範を示し、学界の指導的位置にたった。厳格な反面、開放的で、学際的にも社交界でも交流に長(た)け、粋(いき)で、画筆も巧み、随筆、紀行文にも才筆を振るった。彼の『博物館』（1929。改題『考古学入門』）と『通論考古学』（1922）を超える入門書はいまだない。
