The six painters who inherited the orthodox lineage of the Wu School of Southern School painting in China in the late Ming and early Qing periods were Wang Shimin, Wang Jian, Wang Hui, Wang Yuanqi, Wu Li, and Yun Shouping. They are also known as the Six Great Masters of the Early Qing Period. They played a leading role in the art world at the time, and laid the foundation for the development of landscape painting and literati painting in the Qing period. The arguments of the Four Wangs and their perfect style became the basis of the Qing court painting style. Wang Shimin considered himself the only orthodox painter who was the legitimate descendant of the Southern School of painting as advocated by Dong Qichang, and he took pride in this throughout his life. The other five were united by a strong sense of kinship through ties of kinship, connections, hometowns, teachers and students, and friends, and worked together in creative activities. Their intention was to faithfully practice the theories of Dong Qichang in the Ming period and to prioritize the perfection of the Huang Gongwang style of the Yuan period. They had an extreme respect for ancient methods, based on their belief in upholding the so-called family tradition, and shared a common approach to production.

中国の南宗画系の呉派の正系を受継ぐ明末，清初の王時敏，王鑑，王翬 (おうき) ，王原祁 (おうげんき) ，呉歴，惲寿平 (うんじゅへい) の6人の画家のこと。清初の六大家ともいう。当時の画壇の指導的役割を果すとともに，清代の山水画，文人画の発展の基礎を築き，四王の立論や完整な画風が，清代宮廷絵画様式の基礎となった。王時敏は董其昌の説いた南宗画派の嫡系である唯一の正統派をもってみずからを任じ，それを自負することに生涯終始した。他の5人は親族，縁故，同里，師弟，友人関係などによる強固な同族的意識で結束し，ともに制作活動に従った。その意図は明代の董其昌の理論を忠実に実践し，元代の黄公望様式の完成を第一とすることにあった。いわゆる家伝の法燈を護持するという信条から倣古の方法を極度に尊重し，共通の制作態度を示した。
