A fossil human of the modern human stage. In 1868, five human bones were discovered by workers during railway construction at the Cro-Magnon rock shelter on the banks of the Bézère River in Les Eyzies-de-Tayac, Dordogne, southwestern France, and were examined by French geologist L. Lartet. Since then, many similar bones have been excavated from various parts of Europe, and French anthropologist J.A. Quatrefages collectively named them the Cro-Magnon race. Morphological characteristics include a height of about 180 cm, a large head, a straight jaw, and a visible chin. Small teeth. There is no supraorbital ridge or recession of the forehead like in archaic humans, and the mastoid process is well developed. In this way, they were very similar to modern humans, but their muscles and bones are thought to have been strong. They were distributed throughout Europe and North Africa with some local variations. They date to 35,000 to 10,000 years ago. They are thought to have been a species roughly similar to modern humans, based on their artistic and technological prowess, as evidenced by artefacts belonging to the Late Paleolithic culture and murals such as those in the Cave of Altamira.
